Why Emergency Medicine at NGMC?

Northeast Georgia Medical Center serves a population of over one-million people, in 19 counties. The hospital system includes campuses in Gainesville, Braselton, Winder and Dahlonega and serves as a regional safety net hospital and provides care to low-income, uninsured and other vulnerable populations. Northeast Georgia is the fastest growing region of Georgia and one of the fastest growing regions in the nation.

The NGMC Emergency Medicine Residency Program is accredited by the Residency Review Committee for emergency medicine and accepts up to 12 categorical residents each academic year. Each class of emergency medicine residents has a unique opportunity to assist in building the foundation for the future of our New Residency Program.

Our residency and educational model is built around the core belief that clinical excellence is the foundation for any career you might strive for. We seek to create a world-class clinical training environment so that you will be ready to work in the most demanding clinical arena, and you will have all of the tools necessary to pursue any career niche in Emergency Medicine including leadership, research, advocacy, education or administration.

We recognize that patients are our best teachers. Our program is designed to allow you to achieve clinical excellence through caring for a high volume of a diverse patient population, guided by full-time, experienced clinical educators.

How are the Emergency Medicine Rotations organized?

Emergency Medicine residents at NGMC will rotate in two different emergency departments. NGMC Gainesville is a large, busy county emergency department and referral center that sees over 100,000 visits a year. It is a 557-bed hospital with a long history of high-quality care and has been recognized by multiple organizations as a top performing hospital. It has nearly all subspecialty services available for 24-hour consultation. The multi-disciplinary emergency department staff includes chaplains, respiratory therapists, interpreters, pharmacists and social workers.

Residents will also rotate at NGMC Braselton which is a smaller, suburban hospital that sees 50,000 ED visits annually. It is a 100-bed hospital including an ICU, Cath lab, and multiple surgical specialties.

What is the Emergency Medicine Curriculum?

Resident’s in NGMC’s Emergency Medicine Residency Program will have weekly didactics that will focus on the core emergency medicine curriculum and will include a mix of small group sessions, faculty-led lectures, resident-led lectures, and guest speakers. Additionally, didactics will include regularly scheduled case conferences, radiology review, EKG review, simulation sessions, procedural sessions, morbidity and mortality (with faculty), and advocacy series.

In addition to weekly didactics, residents will have periodic didactic sessions including:

  • CORE didactic series combined with residents of other specialties and including topics such as wellness, patient safety, quality, and fundamentals of research and scholarship.
  • Quarterly journal club with faculty, which will be hosted at a faculty member’s house and allow for socialization and informal mentorship between faculty and residents.
  • PGY specific Year Directed sessions covering topics such as wellness, sleep hygiene, and surviving residency (PGY-1), finding a mentor, developing a career niche, and how to deliver a lecture (PGY-2), finding a job, negotiating a contract, and how to be a clinical educator (PGY-3).

NGMC has a brand new, large state-of-the-art simulation facility with dedicated simulation faculty. The Emergency Medicine residency will incorporate quarterly multi-disciplinary simulation sessions (an opportunity to train with residents of other specialties, nurses, respiratory therapists, medical students and paramedics) as well as quarterly scheduled procedure labs in the simulation center, highlighting difficult or unusual procedures such as difficult airways and high-risk deliveries.
