Priscilla Strom, MD, Named Associate Program Director for NGMC’s General Surgery Residency Program

December 14, 2018

We are thrilled to announce that Priscilla Strom, MD, has been named the associate program director for Northeast Georgia Medical Center’s (NGMC) General Surgery Residency Program.

As associate program director, Dr. Strom will assist Dr. Charles Richart, NGMC General Surgery Residency Program director, in a variety of ways. Strom and several other faculty members are interviewing applicants to help select our inaugural general surgery residents.

Dr. Strom will:

  • Help develop and implement didactic teaching programs
  • Evaluate resident learning and progress
  • Regularly review the program to see what needs to be changed or improved
  • Will help promote wellness and self-care so that residents can navigate the stresses of training with resilience

“We are very excited that Dr. Strom has joined our General Surgery Residency Program as associate program director,” said Dr. Richart. “I have no doubt that her experience and passion for teaching will greatly contribute to the success of our residents during their time with us.”

Dr. Strom’s goal for the GME program is to train competent and confident general surgeons, especially those who would like to stay and practice in the Southeast. She believes residents joining NGMC’s program, particularly as part of the first few inaugural classes, will enjoy the exciting opportunity to have a great deal of impact on their program. These residents will be critical for creating a positive and supportive culture among the residents and for helping the faculty make sure that both clinical and didactic training is as effective as possible.

“As a new program, there will be no preconceived notions of the way things ‘should’ be done,” said Dr. Strom. “We will be consistently evaluating and responding, and the first class of residents will be vital to that process.”

Prior to joining the medical staff at NGMC, Dr. Strom worked in Bangladesh for ten years. When she returned to the United States, she contacted her friend Dr. Ken Dixon at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Dr. Dixon needed a new surgery partner, and Dr. Strom was excited to be chosen for the position.

Dr. Strom currently lives in Gainesville with her 6-year-old dachshund named Marley. She loves living in Gainesville because it is a beautiful town that has everything she needs close by—she’s only five minutes away from work and from her church. Dr. Strom also enjoys being close to Atlanta, as she loves to travel, and the Atlanta airport is a major international travel hub.

Dr. Strom is very involved in her church, where she teaches 4th and 5th grade Sunday school and cooks dinner on Wednesday nights for the children’s program. She has sisters who live in Flowery Branch, GA, in England and on Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga, where she plans to retire someday. In her spare time, Dr. Strom enjoys traveling with her older sister. Last year, they ventured to the Western Mediterranean and the Canadian Rockies, and next year they have plans to travel to Greece and India. Dr. Strom also loves the Atlanta Braves, reading and doing crossword puzzles.
