Enhancing Emergency Preparedness with an Interdisciplinary Approach in Labor and Delivery Units

In a recent series of in situ simulations conducted at the Gainesville campus in labor and delivery and mother/baby units, healthcare professionals engaged in hands-on training to enhance their skills in handling critical scenarios. The simulations covered a range of scenarios, including a D&C procedure that escalated into malignant hyperthermia in the operating room, correct placement of patient legs in stirrups, troubleshooting and preparation of the D&C machine, recognition of malignant hyperthermia, and management protocols such as locating the MH cart and assisting anesthesia. Additionally, participants tackled challenges like shoulder dystocia and an NRP code, focusing on prompt recognition, assisting providers with maneuvers, and performing infant resuscitation using NRP guidelines.

The interdisciplinary approach to these simulations involved OB/GYN MDs, CRNAs, Family Medicine residents, RNs (including charge nurses and ANMs) and scrub techs, allowing learners to use equipment and supplies in real-time emergency scenarios while adhering to current policies, procedures and standards of care. The dedication and collaboration of professionals like OB/GYN Dr. Greg Martin, Family Medicine residents Dr. Linda Akbarshahi and Dr. Jordan Harrell, and CRNAs Denise Jauch and Taylor von Rossen highlighted the commitment to excellence in patient care and readiness for challenging situations.

We want to recognize them for their commitment to patient outcomes and healthcare training.

Empowering Excellence: The New Standardized Patient Mentor Program at Northeast Georgia Health System

The standardized patient (SP) mentor program at Northeast Georgia Health System is a formal initiative designed for new hire SPs. Mentors are paired with mentees in one-to-one dyads, facilitating meetings during the new hire SP onboarding process. This structured program spans a year, aiming to cultivate a lasting relationship between the mentor and the mentee. The mentorship program plays a crucial role in orienting, training and supporting new SPs, fostering competence through mutual respect, trust and interdependence. By exchanging organizational values, culture and professional knowledge, mentors empower mentees in their personal and career development. Meetings are scheduled during the onboarding process, ensuring a smooth transition and alignment with departmental goals. Mentors are carefully matched based on SP profile sheets and availability, enhancing the effectiveness of the mentorship experience.
