About The Program

Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) is one of the fastest growing community teaching hospitals in the state of Georgia. Guided by our mission of improving the health of ourcommunity in all we do, we are committed to delivering quality educational and training experiences to students with the ultimate goal of increasing our physician and clinician workforce in the northeast Georgia region.

As a Level I Trauma Center (Gainesville), a surgical Center of Excellence, and a Comprehensive Stroke Center (Gainesville), students completing rotations at NGMC will be presented with rich educational opportunities and will learn from experienced and passionate faculty with a commitment to team-based education. Some rotations will also enable students to work with our resident physicians. Additionally, students have access to the many in-house resources we offer to residents and fellows, including our Center for Simulation and Innovation, our Research and Quality Improvement team, and Well-Being support services.

Who We Serve

The Office of Medical Education coordinates clinical rotations for medical and physician assistant students that take place on NGMC campuses or with NGHS-affiliated facilities. In partnership with Foothills Area Health Education Center (AHEC), we provide scheduling, credentialing, and onboarding services for students with established rotations.

For information on clinical rotations for nursing and allied health students, contact our Professional Development team.

How to Apply

An application and required documents are to be emailed to the Medical Student Coordinator. Application requirements include:

  • Unofficial Transcripts
  • COMLEX and/or USMLE Scores
  • CV or Resume
  • Personal Statement
  • Please note that NGHS will not be able to provide vaccination exemptions for students. The student/school will need to provide proof of exemption or vaccination status to NGHS. If a student does not have an exemption or verification of vaccination, they will not be able to work.

If your application is approved, additional documentation will be required during on-boarding. The Medical Student Coordinator will communicate with you regarding these requirements.

Affiliation Agreement

For all visiting rotations at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, we must first have an Affiliation Agreement in place with your institution. If you do not know if your school has an agreement with Northeast Georgia Medical Center, please contact your student coordinator or the NGMC GME Medical Student Coordinator.

If there is no agreement currently in place, please allow up to eight weeks to process one. An agreement must be signed by both parties before any rotation begins. Northeast Georgia Medical Center uses the AAMC Affiliation Agreement along with an implementation letter for signature.

For Accepted Rotations

If you have a confirmed rotation with NGMC, you can expect to receive e-mail communication about your rotation start approximately 3 weeks in advance. This will include information on any remaining required documentation, training modules, and the arrival and check-in process on your start date. Your preceptor and/or their department administrators are responsible for sending information on your clinical schedule andother rotation-specific details.

Identification Badges

An NGMC ID badge is required to begin your rotation and will provide access to specific locations throughout our hospital campuses and other NGHS facilities as deemed appropriate. If your badge does not provide adequate access, contact our Medical Student Coordinator. Your NGMC ID badge must be worn and clearly visible at all times during your rotation.

Housing

Foothills AHEC provides housing for health professions students completing clinical rotations in our region. Housing is not guaranteed and is prioritized for students enrolled in Georgia-based programs on a first-come, first-served basis. To apply for housing, or for questions regarding housing assignments, visit https://www.foothillsahec.org/housing-support.

Pre-Med Shadowing and IMG Observerships

NGMC allows shadowing for undergraduate students who intend to apply to medical or PA school. However, we are not able to provide shadowing placement services currently. If you have personally identified a NGMC-affiliated physician or clinician who has agreed to host you for shadowing, contact our Medical Student Coordinator regarding the credentialing and onboarding process.

At this time, we are unable to accommodate observerships, postgraduate sub-internships,or audition rotations for International Medical Graduates due to the large number of residents and students training in our facilities.

To inquire about shadowing opportunities in nursing and allied health professions, contact job.shadowing@nghs.com.
