Why did you choose a career in family medicine?
Prior to medical school I worked as a surgical technician and a registered nurse. In both these professions, I was very clear about my vision and plan to every detail. I took a different approach when I decided to go to medical school and family medicine chose me! I was completely open to every experience and allowed my true calling to show. This is how I found family medicine. As I went through clinical rotations in medical school and thought of the impact I wanted to have in people’s lives and in my community, I knew family medicine was destined for me.
I firmly believe that life is most fulfilling when lived in service to others, and I see family medicine as a career path that beautifully exemplifies this ethos. It offers abundant opportunities to extend a helping hand and make meaningful contributions to the well-being of individuals and communities.
What are some of your fondest memories of medical school?
Some of my fondest memories include the camaraderie among my classmates during late-night study sessions and the sense of accomplishment after successfully mastering complex medical concepts that I was able to build on my nursing education. Most importantly, being a witness to the incredible strength of my mind and my own strength and overcoming challenges. In medical school, I truly found myself, and I cannot fail to mention the beautiful beaches in the island of Antigua which I miss every day.
What drew you to pursue the Family Medicine Residency program at NGMC?
Growing up in the north Gwinnett community, I knew that NGMC is where I belong and want to stay after residency. After my interview, this choice became much clearer as well. Additionally, many of my friends from nursing school are now nurses here, and I have heard nothing but great things about NGMC as a whole institution from them. I knew I wanted to join a program that values my education as much as I do, and that’s exactly what I have found here!
What were your favorite clubs/activities in high school?
In high school, I found joy in both athletic pursuits, particularly volleyball, and in giving back to my community through volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. Additionally, I deeply enjoyed my involvement in student council and took pride in founding and participating in the multicultural society, which celebrated the rich diversity of individuals at North Gwinnett High School.
What are your hobbies?
I have a profound passion for staying physically active, with tennis occupying a special place in my heart, complemented by treasured moments with family and the occasional shopping spree. Outside of the medical realm, I seek solace in outdoor adventures and relish discovering new culinary delights during my travels. Each moment shared with loved ones and friends holds immeasurable value and is cherished deeply.
Do you have a special interest in the field of family medicine (psychiatric patients, heart disease, management, etc.)?
Staying true to my promise to myself of being completely open to every experience, I had no preconceived decisions before entering residency. As I am finishing my first year, I have truly enjoyed every experience so far, yet my rotation with OB/GYN has become one of my fondest memories, and I am strongly considering a pathway towards women’s health and obstetrics.
