Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Graduate Medical Education is thrilled to announce Kalpana Prasad, MD as its newest program director for the planned Psychiatry residency program at NGMC.

Dr. Prasad attended medical school at King George Medical College in Lucknow, India. After medical school, she moved to England where she completed her British Psychiatry Residency with All-Birmingham Hospital system. After moving to the United States, Dr. Prasad completed her US based Psychiatry Residency with Drexel University in Philadelphia, previously known as MCP- Hahnemann University.

In Philadelphia, Dr. Prasad held various roles beginning as a medical director at a women’s mental health unit, inpatient and outpatient clinical director, and then as the city appointed psychiatry consultant to several federally qualified health centers in Philadelphia, where she implemented integrative mental health treatments and trained other mental health professionals. Throughout this time, Dr. Prasad fulfilled her passion for teaching and has had faculty positions with both Drexel University and University of Pennsylvania.

After living and working in Philadelphia, the warmth of weather and people in Georgia brought her and her family to Atlanta where she worked with the Atlanta VA Medical Center and became faculty with Emory University School of Medicine where she supervised the outpatient resident clinic.

Community work in Atlanta became an option with time availability, so Dr. Prasad became active with the Ronald McDonald House, Suicide Awareness programs, and has worked alongside agencies that provide support to abused women. She is the immediate past president of Indo-American Psychiatric Association of Georgia and serves as a member of the Board of Trustees with the Georgia Psychiatric Physicians Association. Dr. Prasad was recently nominated to the 2020-2021 class of the Georgia Physicians Leadership Academy, a one-year program through the Medical Association of Georgia.

In September 2020, Dr. Prasad began her new role as the newly appointed Program Director of the planned Psychiatry residency at Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC). She is in the process of recruiting faculty and completing the accreditation application to submit to the ACGME. The plan is for six residents per year to train at NGMC, beginning July 2022. During this time, Dr. Prasad is also seeing outpatients at Laurelwood, a private not-for-profit behavioral health facility that is part of NGMC.

Dr. Prasad lives with her family in Johns Creek, Georgia and is hopeful to move closer to Lake Lanier soon. She enjoys boating and gardening and going for hikes with her husband Rajiv and her dog Romeo. She has two children, her son is a medical student at Miller School of Medicine in Miami, and her daughter is a budding freshman in high school.
