About the Pre-Med Summer Internship
The GME Research and Quality Improvement team is delighted to offer a six-week summer internship to six undergraduate and/or masters-level students with ties to Georgia who also plan to apply to medical school in Georgia. This is a vital part of the Graduate Medical Education Pipeline Initiative designed to grow the North Georgia physician population.
This internship is designed to allow the passionate undergraduate pre-medical student the opportunity to take part in meaningful research and clinical observations with clinicians. This is a unique opportunity to help students round out their experience in preparation for medical school applications. It does not, in any way, guarantee a future placement at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Applications open in November-December each year
Impact Beyond The Summer
The impact doesn’t end when the summer does.
- Previous interns have been accepted to MD and DO programs at Mercer, PCOM Georgia, KCOM, LSU Shreveport, and more.
- Our interns have published case reports and original research alongside residents and faculty in journals, such as The American Surgeon, American Journal of Case Reports, JMIR Formative Research, Journal of Medical Cases, and others.
How You’ll Spend The Summer
The internship is a six-week, full-time, on-site program. You’ll gain experience, clinical exposure, and engage in the health system as you.
- Rotate through program areas, such as Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Psychiatry, General Surgery, and Cardiovascular Disease.
- Develop a research study from idea to manuscript. Your coordinator will help you at every stage of completing the project. By the end, you will be amazed at your progress!
- Collaborate with residents and faculty to develop a case report.
- Participate in simulated medical experiences! We’re privileged to have a world-class accredited simulation program here at Northeast Georgia Health System. In collaboration with the medical education simulation team, we schedule simulated experiences, such as ultrasounds, intubations, code blues, and heart attacks.
- Connect with hospital staff and administration and take part in presentations
Stipend Support
We are delighted to be able to support each accepted and enrolled applicant with a stipend.
