About

Dr. Abby Banks-McClelland is a Georgia native born and raised in Atlanta. She attended the University of South Carolina for college, received her bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and molecular biology, and continued her education at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Greenville, SC. She met her husband in medical school, and they were married just before graduation.

Dr. Banks-McClelland was inspired to pursue a career in Emergency Medicine by her father, a pediatric emergency medicine physician, and her mother, an emergency department nurse. She is passionate about researching healthcare providers’ mental health and burnout.

Dr. Banks-McClelland enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband and two dogs. She loves lake days, hiking, and watching Carolina Gamecock football.

If you have a spouse or significant other, tell us their name and a little about them.

Patton McClelland. We met in medical school and will be getting married on April 23rd, 2022. Patton is in the Air Force and has matched into internal medicine in San Antonio. We’re spending the first few years of our marriage apart but are excited to support each other as we learn and grow into great physicians.

Tell us about any pets that will be moving with you.
We have a pointer mix named Duke, a German Shorthaired Pointer puppy named Daisy, and a beautiful calico cat named Dani. The pups are staying with me while Dani and Patton take on Texas.

What do you like to do in your free time?
I love cooking, weightlifting, and hiking. I love the outdoors and would probably spend all of my time outside if I could.

Tell us an interesting fact about you.
I have a black belt in a South Korean martial art called Choi Kwang Do.

What’s a unique skill you have that you don’t think anyone else in the residency will have?
I went to circus camp as a kid and learned how to perform on a trapeze and ride a unicycle (not at the same time, though).

I am an Atlanta native who went to the University of South Carolina, where I studied Biochemistry and Spanish, and attended the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville for my medical degree. I love spending my free time experimenting with new recipes or outside with my dogs in the kitchen. I enjoy camping, hiking, and just about anything with lake life. I am a military wife and look forward to eventually traveling around with my husband.

I am interested in eventually pursuing a fellowship in disaster, tactical, or prehospital medicine. I am also interested in lifestyle medicine and mental health, especially how we can apply that to Emergency Medicine and burnout.
