Simulation training at Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) is integral in training Internal Medicine residents to become hardwired for excellence. Simulation training will provide opportunities to improve interdisciplinary teamwork and communication skills during response emergencies.
The training lab allows residents to perfect technical skills through errors that will not harm patients and allows practicing physicians to learn how to diagnose and treat conditions that are rare and infrequently seen in the everyday practice of medicine. The benefit of skill practice before treating real-life patients is very valuable. The internal medicine program, for example, will use the simulation lab to teach procedural skills such as intubation and placing central venous catheters and drainage tubes. Residents will also use “standardized patients” in the simulation lab to train for challenging safety situations such as transfusion reactions. Standardized patients will also allow residents a chance to practice communication skills like delivering bad news to a patient. Team simulation exercises will be performed to improve the coordination of roles and responsibilities between members of the team.
The training lab will allow our Graduate Medical Education (GME) program coordinators to assess and compare resident physicians’ performance across programs, as well as across years within the program. This analysis means the GME program is committed to ongoing excellence and improvement in all aspects of our practice.
Toni Musta is our new simulation technician who will help with set up and programming of our simulators and simulation labs. Musta will work with faculty from all of our programs to ensure that our residents receive the best training possible through simulation.
With our new simulation lab, experienced faculty physicians, a mentorship program and more, residents will truly be hardwired for excellence once they complete the three-year internal medicine training at NGMC.
