Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) is thrilled to have John E. Delzell Jr., MD, MSPH, MBA, FAAFP leading the Graduate Medical Education (GME) program, as vice president of Medical Education and Designated Institutional Official (DIO).
In his role, Dr. Delzell is responsible for oversight and administration of all aspects of our GME program including compliance with all specialty, subspecialty, and institutional requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Dr. Delzell has more than 25 years of experience leading and mentoring faculty and residents across the country. Before coming to NGMC, Dr. Delzell served as vice president of medical education and DIO for the Broward Health system in Fort Lauderdale. Dr. Delzell also served as the associate dean for GME at Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and held leadership positions at the University of Kansas, the University of Tennessee and the University of Missouri – Columbia.
Dr. Delzell is recognized by his peers and leaders at institutions across the country for his passion for teaching. In 2018, Dr Delzell was appointed to the Georgia Board for Healthcare Workforce and he serves on the Hall County Library Board.
“I am continually energized by our residents,” says Dr. Delzell. “Their questions keep me sharp, their passion encourages me and their idealism keeps me humble. I am happy that I am able to be involved in teaching students and residents across the medical curriculum.”
Dr. Delzell received his medical degree and a master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Missouri—Columbia, where he also completed his residency in Family Medicine and a fellowship in Academic Family Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and a member of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and the American College of Healthcare Executives.
In a short time period, Dr. Delzell and his GME leadership team at NGMC have received accreditation for six residency programs and two fellowships. The vision for the Office of Medical Education is to create a unique clinical learning environment that leverages the quality and safety programs that are part of Northeast Georgia Health System’s Quest for Excellence. Dr. Delzell recently commented, “It is a great opportunity to train residents in a place that values patient safety above everything!”

Dr. Delzell is married to Dr. Heidi Chumley. She is a nationally recognized academic family physician who works in medical school leadership. Dr. Delzell and Chumley are avid runners. Dr. Delzell ran his first marathon in 2018. The couple has five children: one who lives in Texas with his wife and two daughters; one in Florida with her husband; one in college in Missouri; one in college at Brenau University in Gainesville; and one in high school in Gainesville. The family also includes two Bulldogs, a Bengal cat, a turtle, and a snake.

Northeast Georgia Medical Center’s (NGMC) Graduate Medical Education program will begin receiving applications for the Internal Medicine and General Surgery Residency Programs in August 2018 and will match the inaugural class in the spring of 2019.
