Hello! My name is Atithi Patel, a Transitional Year resident at Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC).

My days as an intern in the MICU at NGMC have been filled with opportunities to learn and manage a wide variety of critically ill patients. One of my favorite parts of the rotation has been physiology rounds with Dr. Kumar, where we take the time to understand the pathophysiology behind each patient’s presentation and how it guides our management. He is always open to questions, no matter how simple, which really makes this a great learning environment.

I’ve also appreciated the hands-on opportunities to learn procedures, including different types of central and arterial lines, paracentesis and thoracentesis. Having respiratory therapists and pharmacists round with us has been especially valuable, as they bring different perspectives to patient care and help us better understand ventilator management and medication decisions.

Overall, the MICU has been a challenging but rewarding experience that has helped me grow more comfortable managing complex patients while learning from the entire ICU team.
