Mission and Program Aims

Mission:

The mission of the Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship program is to train and develop competent cardiovascular medicine physicians who can thrive in any academic, research, community or private practice setting. We are committed to the development of compassionate and knowledgeable cardiologists, capable of providing unparalleled care to the patients and communities we serve. This commitment aligns the cardiovascular disease fellowship with the larger mission of NGMC to “improve the health of the community in all we do.”

Our aim is to strive to be an exemplary community-based fellowship training program, intentionally grounded in the core values of the sponsoring organization:

  • Respectful Compassion
    Fellows acknowledge and embrace their unique and influential role in patient care, impacting the most sacred moments in life.
  • Passion for Excellence
    As both learners and leaders, fellows are in pursuit of continuous improvement, always striving to be better tomorrow than today.
  • Deep Interdependence
    Fellows understand the significant, individual roles within the total care team, with a full appreciation that they cannot do their job without the support of others.
  • Responsible Stewardship
    Fellows recognize their accountability in the value of care delivered to a patient, with a focus on both quality and cost. Resource decisions fellows make today influence the organization’s ability to invest in tomorrow’s future.

Program Aims

The overall educational goal of the NGMC Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship program is to provide comprehensive training in general cardiology that meets or exceeds the standards promulgated by both the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and specified in the following documents:

  • The ACGME Program Requirements for Cardiovascular Disease and the ACC 2015 Core Cardiovascular Training Statement (COCATS 4).
    The fellowship program’s goals are to assure the provision of safe and effective care to the individual patient, to assure that each fellow develops the skills, knowledge, and attitudes required to enter the unsupervised practice of cardiology, and establish a foundation for continued professional growth.

The goal of the program is to provide the fellows with an educational experience that fosters attainment of the following ACC-defined Entrustable Professional Activities:

  • Cardiovascular Consultation – evaluate, diagnose and develop treatment plans for patients with known, suspected, or at risk of developing cardiovascular disease;
  • Acute Cardiac Care – manage patients with acute cardiac conditions;
  • Chronic Cardiovascular Disease Management – manage patients with chronic cardiovascular diseases;
  • Cardiovascular Testing – appropriately utilize cardiovascular testing;
  • Disease Prevention and Risk Factor Control – implement disease prevention and risk factor control measures, addressing comorbidities;
  • Team-based Care – work effectively to promote patient-centered interdisciplinary team-based care;
  • Livelong Learning – engage in lifelong learning.

The Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship program strives to provide fellows with an educational curriculum that is based on the six core competencies as defined by the ACGME: medical knowledge, patient care, systems-based practice, practice-based learning and improvement, professionalism, and interpersonal and communication skills.
