Congratulations to Dr. Riaz Mahmood, the new Chief Resident for Research. He will be starting in his new position on July 1. Here is a little bit more about Dr. Mahmood!
Tell us about yourself!
I was born in Pakistan and moved to the US when I was 11. I grew up in the small town of Leesburg, Georgia. I moved to Raleigh after finishing my undergrad and met my wife, Sania. We have been married for nine years and have two daughters, Zayna (7) and Emma (3). We decided to move to Georgia to be closer to the family for residency training.
How are you able to manage COVID, residency and family?
Work-life balance during COVID is challenging. Setting priorities and protecting family time keeps our family going, but nothing is possible without the support of my amazing wife. As residents, we already have an excellent fund of knowledge, yet we are humbled daily by the things we learn from faculty, staff, and our patients.
What are the milestones you want to achieve personally and professionally?
My mentors always focus on providing patient-centered care, and I hope to emulate this in my practice. I am incredibly fortunate to have been selected as Chief Resident for Research, QI, and Patient Safety and excited to continue growing and giving back to my program. I am also looking forward to spending more time with my family this coming year.
As a doctor, what is your vision?
To create an improved healthcare system, which promotes public health, better clinical outcomes, accounts for social determinants of health, and provides cost-effective care through innovative research.
What made you become interested in research?
Research is integral to providing care that leads to better clinical outcomes. Since undergrad, I have been focusing on research. The COVID pandemic has highlighted the importance of evidence-based practice, and through research, we learned which treatments improved mortality and morbidity.
