Welcome from the Program Director
Thank you for your interest in the Psychiatry Residency program at Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC). We are a community psychiatry residency committed to training the next generation of psychiatrists to deliver patient-centered, evidence-based care across a wide range of clinical settings.
At the heart of our program is a deep commitment to the art, humanism and science of psychiatry. We emphasize psychotherapy education and the cultivation of meaningful therapeutic relationships, while also preparing residents to engage with cutting-edge advances in interventional psychiatry, neuroscience and psychopharmacology. Our curriculum integrates adult learning theory and active, experiential learning methods to support residents in becoming thoughtful, curious and lifelong learners and leaders in their future communities.
Our training is grounded in service to the diverse populations of both the northern Atlanta suburbs and rural Northeast Georgia. Residents gain robust clinical experiences through partnerships with private practices, addiction treatment programs, correctional and law enforcement systems, free and charitable clinics and nonprofit organizations. These partnerships reflect our mission to improve mental health care access and equity across rural and underserved communities.
Based in Gainesville, Georgia—just an hour north of Atlanta and nestled alongside Lake Lanier and the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains—our program offers a unique blend of natural beauty, small-town charm and academic opportunity. Residents train in a variety of settings including inpatient, outpatient, consultation-liaison, child and adolescent, geriatric, forensic, integrated care, ECT and telepsychiatry. Our faculty come from diverse backgrounds and are deeply committed to teaching, supervision, mentorship and your personal and professional development
We accept six residents per year into our categorical four-year training program. I am honored to serve as program director and would be thrilled to welcome you to a residency that values compassion, intellectual rigor, community engagement and the transformative potential of our exciting field.
Sincerely,
Samuel Dotson, MD
