Why Train at NGMC for Emergency Medicine?

May 5, 2021

What an amazing time it is right now at Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Graduate Medical Education! My name is Dr. Anitha Mathew, and I am one of the APDs for our new Emergency Medicine residency program. We are so excited to start this important residency and to train the next generation of Emergency Medicine physician leaders. I know that our program is especially equipped to do that really well.

For starters, we have a great patient population to learn from. Our main teaching hospital in Gainesville, is a busy level two trauma center that sees over 100,000 high acuity patients a year with diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and a variety of clinical presentations. Our secondary hospital in Braselton, has over 50,000 annual patient visits. As a smaller emergency department, the residents will have more direct teaching from our faculty.

“The faculty here are excellent clinicians, who are excited about teaching residents. Many of our faculty have been attendings at other academic institutions and have vast experience teaching residents. We also have several faculty who are fellowship-trained in toxicology, simulation, ultrasound, and research, with plans to start our own fellowship programs in the future.”

Our acuity level is very high. We have an admission rate of greater than 20% and a 5% rate of critically ill and injured patients. Our Emergency Department conducts a large number of procedures, and residents will have many opportunities to develop their skills on high risk (but infrequent) procedures in our state-of-the-art simulation center.

Finally, Gainesville, Georgia, is a beautiful town in the northeast corner of Georgia. We are close to everything – mountains, lakes, beaches, a large airport, and city nightlife are all within driving distance. The town itself has a low cost of living with robust perks for residents offered by NGMC, so you will be able to live a great life during your time here and make the most of your downtime.

Check out our virtual hangout sessions, we’d love to meet you and answer any questions you may have about our program!
